It has been an exciting Harvest 2011. Last week, we brought in beautiful, fragrant Gewurztraminer clusters from the vineyards closest to the back woods. We needed to get those beauties in early because the deer pressure was most as risk in that area. The second half of those vineyards is likely next on the list to bring in. Chris our vineyard manager says the nose on the Gewurz is "Insane."

Yesterday, again with the help of so many fantastic volunteers we concluded the Harvest of our Pinot Gris. The Pinot Gris harvest yielded 12.6 tons (approximately 720 cases and a record yield!) and promises to be a delicious vintage. And in our "west coast operations", Bob and Karen Edwards oversaw the Harvest of 8.5 tons of the Pinot Grigio. It is so exciting to not only have same grape and same winemaker on both coasts but then to Harvest the same day on both coasts is a thrill.

This is a photo of our first bin of 2011 Merlot coming in at a delicious 24 Brix (sugar levels). In the words of Bob Edwards, "Yum, yum".

So, what do we do with all this good news? How 'bout we throw a party this weekend? Are you coming to the Harvest Festival?!

Thanks for coming to our party on July 10th. We are well on our way to making this another sold out success at 430 tickets sold of our 450 capacity for Lobster Bake 2011. If you have not purchased your tickets yet, be sure to do so soon as they will surely be gone by week end! A fantastic night planned with full Lobster Bake presentation from the experts at McGrath, long family style seating, two tents, great food and boogie-down after with SUGAR. We love our new summer traditions.

A tip for drivers- it is the last night of the North Stonington Fair (also a classic!) so leave plenty of time to get here and/or check out alternate routes to avoid Wyassup Road. We recommend continuing on Route 2 until Ryder Road. It will drop you right at the base of Chester Maine Road.

It was a close one. Thank you to the more than 300 foodies who joined us on Sunday evening for the sold out Culinary Showdown to benefit New England Farms! The weather held and the Springtime greens and colorful blossoms made for a perfect backdrop at the winery for a good ole' fashioned state rivalry. The food was delicious {whet your whistle when we post the menu next}, the wine was flowing and the competition was on!

The winners? The Daniel Packer Inne (Connecticut) for best signature dish and best state overall went to the very rowdy and proud, Rhode Island! Both Connecticut Farmland Trust and Farm Fresh Rhode Island- our beneficiaries- were winners too (with the bigger donation going to the overall state winner- Rhode Island). Lively crowd, great Jazz, ten delicious dishes, JE wine a-flowin' and all for a good cause. Is it too corny to say, every one was a winner on Sunday?

Culinary Showdown May 15th!

Jonathan Edwards Winery kicks off Spring by bringing together ten top Chefs in the region, pairing it with delicious JE wine and adding a generous pinch of good-ole fashioned rivalry in their May 15 fundraiser for New England farms. The Culinary Showdown consists of five top restaurants from Connecticut and five from Rhode Island battling it out for their states chosen beneficiary. A portion of the proceeds from the evening’s event will benefit both Connecticut Farmland Trust and Farm Fresh Rhode Island.

Each chef from the areas best restaurants prepares a small signature dish using at least one ingredient sourced from a local farm. Attendees will eat and drink their way to a winner choosing both their favorite restaurant and best state overall. Tickets for this tented event are limited and $50 a person. The price includes a sampling of ten signature dishes and four Jonathan Edwards wines, and live music.

As we gear up in May for our very own J. Sattui (as we jokingly call it, a nod to Napa's V. Sattui Winery and home to an incredible cheese + cured meats market with everything you might need for a wine country picnic) we found this post the perfect inspiration.

Jonathan Edwards Winery is honored to take home a few medals from the 11th annual Finger Lakes International Wine Competition. The selected wines? The Silver Medals went to our Merlot and Estate Connecticut Chardonnay with Bronze Medals for our Petite Sirah and Estate Connecticut Cabernet Franc. With nearly 4000 wines entered from 19 nations and all 50 states we were happy to participate and place in this notable two-day competition. All proceeds are donated to Camp Good Days a non-profit organization dedicated since 1979 to improving the lives of children and families touched by cancer. We toast to a good cause and a great competition!

Spring brings lots of good reasons to hit the road and consider a trip to Northern California! One of our favorite luxury boutique hotel sites, Mr. and Mrs. Smith Hotels gives plenty of reasons to enjoy the mustard fields in bloom, quieter Tasting Rooms in wine country and warm, sunny days. As you may know, our members gather in the candle lit Barrel Room for course after course of artfully prepared food paired with our libraried wine. We love collaboration. When you have some of the region's best artists and vendors in your own backyard, it makes collaboration such a joy. We first approached Sarah of True Event some time ago to see if True Event would be willing to donate time and talents to design our space. Without missing a beat and in 'true' form, she cheerfully agreed and she along with her colleague Abby are busy transforming the eclectic Barrel Room space. For years, talented filmmakers at Buzz Media Company have given their time to make our 'year-in-the-life' short film. Once again, they are back on board for what promises to be one of the best films yet. We are thrilled to also have the graphic design genius of Emily at PaperMoss for all of our paper goods and menus, the floral artistry of Yumiko at Hana Floral and the sensitive and artful eye of photographer Anna of Anna Sawin Photography to capture the evening on film. We look forward to sharing the details of the night and the talent behind these companies in the coming weeks.

For the third summer in a row, Jonathan Edwards Winery is the proud to sponsor the world-renowned Newport's historic International Tennis Hall of Fame Campbells Tournament. The International Tennis Hall of Fame is a non-profit institution dedicated to preserving the history of tennis and providing a landmark for tennis enthusiasts worldwide. The Tennis Hall of Fame presently hosts the opening night concert of Newport's JVC Jazz Festival. The Casino was the site of the first Newport Jazz Festival in 1954.

In 2011, Andre Agassi headlines the ballot for International Tennis Hall of Fame induction. The ceremony is currently sold out but be we will be there the whole week (Jonathan Edwards Winery will be the only wine sponsor) to enjoy lots of great events + court side seats with our JE friends and watching the pros in this historic setting!

First come, first serve for $50! They are 60 Gallon, generally five-year old barrels that are no longer useful in aging our wine but make great pub tables, barrel stave candle holders and planters for your yard. Please call the winery between 11-5 (wednesday through Sunday 860.535.0202) to check availability. We cannot reserve barrels and ask for payment/pick up at the same time.

Friday was the day. The fourth annual Cookie Bake-Off here amongst the staff at the winery. In a very consensus-building, democratic, hardworking but laid-back crew, this annual holiday tradition brings out our wildly competitive sides. And as it turns out, in true holiday spirit, we were all winners. Actually there were two tied for third, second and for the first time ever, first prize. Congratulations to Mike and Todd on their co-win. We know it frustrated them both all weekend.

Who knew toffee cookies, caramel chocolate with coconut and oatmeal raisin paired so well with our new Syrah?

Used Barrels for Sale

The use of oak wine barrels to store and age wine is a centuries old tradition. With more than 300 French and American Oak barrels here at JE, our wine is aged in predominantly sixty gallon barrels (holds 25 cases of wine!). This final step in winemaking allows slow evaporation of the contents during the aging period to bring out the nuances of flavor. Common aromas and descriptors found in wine such as 'toasty' or 'vanilla' to 'nutty' or 'caramel' are yielded from oak aging.

How long do the barrels work for us? Typically about four or five years and then they are 'put out to pasture' to be re-invented as porch accents, barrel stave candle holders or bistro table tops by our customers. Supplies are limited but we promise to announce when they come available. Interested? We currently have 20 that just came available! First come, first serve. $50 each and we recommend pick upon purchase. Cheers!

It is a big day for the Connecticut Vineyard Winery Association. They announced the winners of the Passport Program. There were many hopefuls who participated and spent their summer and fall visiting and sampling wine at sixteen of the twenty six wineries in their passport for a stamp. {tough assignment, but someone has to do it!} Each of these completed passports are submitted in a drawing. Grand Prize? A two week trip to Spain visiting the wineries and exploring the Spanish countryside!

We are happy to report one of our favorite friends and customers, the Wargas won a few years ago and had a wonderful time. But without further delay----the winners of the 2010 Connecticut Wine Trail Passport Program. Congratulations Cindy!

Where can you find following: the charms of historic Mystic Seaport and eclectic restaurants, the wide beaches of Rhode Island, celebrity chef eateries and big city concerts {casinos} and bucolic farm country all in a fifteen minute radius? North Stonington, Connecticut! For all of our new customers each month making the winery a stop on their road trip or staycation- we get the questions all the time- where to go, where to eat and where to stay. We thought we would share with you, one staff person at a time, a list of our favorites.

First up, Ashley Griffin. Perpetually cheerful, knowledgeable and welcoming, Ashley has been a part of the Tasting Room for more than 6 years. Ashley makes the trip from Boston all summer long to lend a hand at the winery and spend the weekend at her parents beach house in Rhode Island. She is one of our long term employees and such a gem. Each member of the staff will pick the categories. Here are a few of Ashley's favorites:

Favorite Summer Day: East Beach in Watch Hill, get an ice cream at St. Clair's, then take the new ferry over to Stonington for Oysters and dinner at Water Street Cafe.

Favorite Fourth of July Activity: Check out the waterslides, go-carts, mini-golf and batting cages in Misquamicut, Rhode Island. Be warned: crowds! Get a fruity drink and some grub at Paddy's bar on the beach, play a round of volleyball and sit back on the beach once night falls for one of the regions best firework display.

Favorite Margarita: Margaritas in Mystic, no doubt! Try the "Lime in the Coconut" and "Classic Strawberry" that they are known for. The upstairs bar is a great way to beat the winter blues because it always feels like Spring Break in there.

Favorite Winter Walk: Grab your winter jackets and four-legged friends and head to Inn Beach in Weekapaug, Rhode Island. This is a private beach in the summer but open to the all in the winter. It makes a lovely three mile round trip walk. Bring the football and make a day of it!

Bob and Karen Edwards wrapped up their Napa Harvest last week, the wine fermented and is getting ready for the cross-country journey to our cellar in Connecticut to barrel age. The first refrigerated tractor-trailer with our young wine made its way here this week. While out West, the Edwards were happy to get a visit from their granddaughter, Katie who watched them at work.
